Physical Therapy for Hip

Seeing a physical therapist is necessary for nearly all hip issues. Your physical therapist’s job is to examine your mobility, strength, muscle length, and body mechanics and suggest exercises on how to improve any deficits. Our physical therapists at Baton Rouge Physical Therapy in Baton Rouge, Denham Springs, and Gonzales have years of experience finding long-lasting hip pain solutions for patients of all ages and experiences. Your therapist may suggest stretches for the muscle surrounding your hips depending on what muscles are tight, strengthening exercises depending on what muscles are weak, and ways to modify activities so you can heal appropriately while continuing to work or play a sport.

What Causes Hip Discomfort?

Hip discomfort is typically caused by a few different problems, and typically from an injury or gradual overuse over time. Younger patients will tend to seek physical therapy for problems like muscle strains, ligament sprains, bursitis, and labral tears that occur from an injury. Bursitis results in pain and inflammation at the outside of the hip. Hip impingement happens from the top of the thigh (femur) colliding with the hip socket and results in groin pain. Our older patients tend to develop arthritis and hip fractures from falling. Arthritis may require a hip replacement in some cases, and also presents with groin pain. No matter the cause of the discomfort, strengthening and improving hip mobility can typically help you return to your normal activities.

Exercises for Hip Pain

Treatment from a PT will include many hip exercises to reduce your pain and restore your mobility. Your physical therapist will give you stretches that will improve your motion in all directions based on which muscles are tight. Your therapist will help improve your strength, giving exercises for your glutes and muscles in the back of your legs. Your therapist also may work on improving the mobility inside your joint to allow for pain relief. It is important to be evaluated by one of our therapists to find out your best program.

When to See a Physical Therapist

You should see a physical therapist for any hip pain, weakness, or if you have goals to return to an activity that you love. Physical therapists will work collaboratively with you and any other involved healthcare providers to improve your pain, restore your mobility, and give you strategies to maintain these improvements outside of therapy.
